VE Day: Northiam will be taking part in the national commemoration of the end of the Second World War today (Friday). At 9.32pm, the beacon will be lit to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE day. Everyone is invited to join in the procession from the Playing Fields – meet at 8.30pm to process up Dixter Road with drums and flaming torches.

Chitiwiri: The next collection in aid of the projects in Chitiwiri will be on Monday 11th. If you have any unwanted clothes, pairs of shoes, curtains, bed linen, bags, belts or perfume and would like to help raise money for the community of Chitiwiri, please put them in tied bin liners or call at Forge House for green bags. You can leave the bags outside the front door or garage if dry, or alternatively call Sally or Richard 01797 252108 to arrange a convenient time. Sally is also collecting spectacle cases for reading glasses which have been collected to help the teachers at the school in Chitiwiri (not old spectacles, though!).

Plant Sale: One of the highlights of the gardening year is the Horticultural Society’s popular Plant Sale, which will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 9th May at 2pm. There will be over 1,000 plants including perennials, vegetables and herbs, grown by the experts in the Society and at Great Dixter. If there’s even the tiniest gap in your garden, you will want to go along! Prices are very reasonable, and to make it easier for us, they will be on tables according to price. Can you afford to miss it?

Quiz: Northiam Bonfire Society’s Quiz Night will be in the Village Hall on Saturday – 7 for 7.30pm, and is sold out, so only booked teams this time, please, although some of the teams will be one or two players light, so if you are happy to go with the flow and join possibly the winning team, just come along.

Picnic: Messy Church invites everyone to meet in the Playing Fields on Sunday at 4pm for games and a picnic. Bring your own char or rug to sit on, and, of course, your picnic!

Footpath Walk: The Footpath Group head to Hastings on Wednesday, leaving the surgery car park at 9.15am. An 8 mile walk through Hastings Country Park will be enlivened with a fish and chip lunch and possible visit to the Lifeboat Station in Hastings.

Coffee Stop: Meet up with familiar faces at Coffee Stop each Wednesday in the Church Centre between 10am and 12 noon.

Lace Group: The Lace Group meets in the Jenkins Room on Wednesday at 2pm.

Pamper Night: Join Northiam Nursery for a Pamper Night on Thursday from 7.30pm. Start with a Pimms, then take relaxing look at some lovely fashion, body shop products, jewellery etc. Entry and parking is free, although donations to the Nursery will be very welcome!

Parish Council: Alternatively, join the workers, when the new Parish Council meets in the Jenkins Room at 7pm, and will elect the Chairman and Vice-Chairman. There is still a vacancy on the Parish Council, if you feel you could serve the village in this way.

Coming up!: We have the big St Michael’s Hospice Coffee Morning next Saturday. On the Monday there will be a Public Consultation Meeting in the Primary School over plans to change to Academy status. The Christian Aid Coffee Morning, with the popular Plant Sale at The Byre House will be on 23rd, St Mary’s is inviting everyone to a cream tea to celebrate Pentecost and the completion of the restoration project on 24th, and the Bonfire Society’s Garden Safari will be on 31st!
