Badminton: Badminton Clubs in the Pretious Sports Hall run on Fridays, with the Junior Club at 5.30pm and 6.30pm (Primary & Secondary ages), with the adult club following on at 8pm. The Monday club runs for an hour from 5.45pm. All very welcome – we have two courts so can accommodate a range of abilities.

Dancing: Your alternative on a Friday evening is our popular Dance Club, which meets in the Village Hall for Sequence Dancing from 7.30-10pm. It costs £2 which includes tea and biscuits, and is suitable for all ages. Sequence dancing is very sociable, fun and good exercise without being exhausting! If you would like to find out more, contact Brian on 01580 881877 or pop along to the Village Hall and see for yourself, you will be very welcome.

Jumble Sale: Northiam Nursery and Beckley pre-School will be holding a Jumble sale on Sunday 28 September from 10am to midday in Beckley Village Centre.

Footpath walk: The Footpath Group will be walking a 5-mile circular route in Cranbrook on Sunday, leaving the surgery car park at 1.30pm, or meeting in Cranbrook central car park at 2pm.

Wednesday: All are welcome at Coffee Stop between 10am and midday for coffee and a chat in the Church Centre. The WI meet in the Jenkins Room at 2.30pm, when Laton Frewen will speak about Grace Darling, and the competition will be Heroes. Our local hero, Sally Bickersteth, will also be at the meeting with an update on developments and friendships in Chitiwiri, following her visit earlier in the summer.

Bonfire Procession & Fireworks: You can’t have escaped noticing that Northiam is the first of the Senlac group Bonfire Processions this year, with our Firework night on Saturday 4 October at the bonfire field, next to the cricket ground of Frewen School on the A28, Hastings Road. The Parish Council has kindly agreed to fund a viewing platform to facilitate disabled access to the bonfire field. If you would like a space, please contact Pete or Ruth on 01797 253798, so they know how big the platform needs to be. The field will be open from 6pm and there will be a bar, refreshments and amusements. The procession will leave the bonfire field at 7.30pm, walking to the Muddy Duck and back again, so anywhere along Main Street should give you a good view. Tell your friends! The street collection at the Bonfire goes to local good causes. In the light of recent tragic events, the Society has decided to donate half of this year’s collection to the Mary Shipstone Memorial Fund, and the other half between two village causes, the Northiam School Crossing Patrol and the Thursday Seniors Club. The council is working with Mary’s family to decide how the funds will be spent, it is thought partly on playground equipment on Northiam playing field, where Mary enjoyed spending time. So please give generously to these causes. We are always in need of more collectors, so anyone wishing to help with the bucket collection should contact Simon Merrick at [email protected].

Horticulture: The Horticultural Society’s next meeting is on Friday 3 October at 2.30pm, when Sally Gregson will talk on Hydrangeas. On Saturday and Sunday there will be a Plant Fair at Great Dixter from 11am-4pm, with horticulturalists from the UK and the rest of Europe showing their plants and giving talks over the weekend. A range of food and drink will be on sale, and the entrance fee will be £8 which includes access to the gardens.

Concert: On Saturday 18 October, Northiam Chamber Orchestra will be joined by visiting soloists to perform Haydn’s Creation in the Village Hall. Tickets are £10, available from Mervyn & Lynn at Rose Cottage, 253443, with proceeds to St Mary’s Restoration Fund.

Adult Education: In October, there are two courses being offered at Tilling Green Community Centre, Rye, hosted by Rye Partnership together with Sussex Coast College. The first 10-hour course is free of charge, further courses (there will be more later in the year) will attract a small charge. First Aid will be held on 7 and 14 October, from 9.30-3.30pm, with a certificate at the end of the course. Practical Gardening will be held from 1-3pm for 5 weeks from 20 October. Younger students: The Iden and Frewen Educational Foundation will be meeting in November to consider applications for grants. If you know of anyone who might be eligible, please let them know about this wonderful fund! Christine Browning (253254) will be able to talk them through, but grants are available to residents of Northiam who are under 25 and undertaking further or higher education, apprenticeships, or sport at county level.
