Northiam

Karen Ayling, The White House, Dixter Road

I’ve just been chatting to my sister in Bristol who tells me that celebrating Bonfire Night has all but ceased, having been replaced by Halloween. People of Northiam, we must rally round to fight for our heritage - and the right to blow things up! I don’t imagine that dressing up as a ghost has ever sparked a conversation about parliamentary democracy.

And by some strange coincidence, we shall be having a Bonfire Celebration here in the village! You may have heard from the Bonfire Society on Guy Fawkes’ Night, when we put on a display at Frewen College, by way of a thank you for the use of their field for our main Procession and Display on Saturday November 23rd.

Make a note in your diary, and invite your friends over – it should be good! There will be visiting Societies, including two wonderful drumming bands, and you can watch the torchlit parade from Main Street then follow the procession onto the field where there will be a large bonfire and a firework display. Collectors along the route will be rattling buckets in aid of our three charities this year – Northiam Pre-school, Northiam Scouts and Frewen College.

The parade starts at 7.30pm, and we would be grateful if people could park cars off the route if at all possible. The parades tend to be quite noisy, so please take precautions with animals and young children.

More immediately, Sunday’s church service of Remembrance will start at 10.15am and will end with a short Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial at 11am. We do ask drivers to respect these few moments of communal silence. There will also be a short time of Remembrance on Monday 11th, at 11am.

Messy Church meets at 4pm on Sunday, and this month’s theme is Loving our World – God’s Creation.
