Keep Calm and Carry On! This weekend, Northiam Showtimers will be presenting their usual mix of music, dances and sketches – good old variety. As you can probably gather from the title, this production looks at the lighter side of events during the 1940s.

If you enjoy the likes of Dad’s Army and Allo Allo or the sounds of Glenn Miller, The Andrews Sisters or Vera Lynn, then this is right up your street! To add to the atmosphere, audiences are encouraged to dress up 40s style. So have a rummage through your wardrobes and attics, charity shops or jumble sales, or why not hire a stunning outfit? Tickets for reserved seating are £7 and can be booked by calling the Showtimers hotline on 01424 882076. Performances are 7.30pm on Friday 27th April and Saturday 28th April, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Refreshments and a bar will be available at all performances. It is hoped to be able to give a donation to the Royal British legion from any profits.

The Village Coffee Morning Market will be held today (Friday) in the Village Hall between 9am and 12noon, with tea and coffee with some lovely cakes, jewellery, cards, ceramics, cheese, meats, jams, vegetables, plants, furniture, candles and wooden items. Call in and see what’s on offer this month.

There will be a Christian Viewpoint for Men’s breakfast at the Muddy Duck on Saturday morning. If you would like to attend, please call Ben Godfrey – 01424 882433, it usually an irresistible combination of a really good English breakfast and interesting speaker.

A Lion Roars in the Gill – I’m afraid I’m going to need this one explaining! – the Footpath Group will leave the surgery car park at 1.10pm on Sunday heading for Harmers Reservoir lay-by off Upper Park Road, Hastings. The walk will be accompanied by an Alexandra Park Ranger, and there will be the option to take a longer walk, and there is the cafe for a tea stop.

On Tuesday, the Over 60s meet in the Village Hall at 2pm.

Coffee Stop starts the day on Wednesday with open house in the Church Centre between 10am and 12 noon.

The WI meet in the Jenkins Room at 1.30pm for their Resolution meeting. There will be the usual book table, and flower of the month, and this month’s competition is to bring something beginning with the letter M.

Rye & District Association of the National Trust will be heading for Eastbourne on Wednesday to see a matinee performance of The Diary of Anne Frank at the Devonshire Park Theatre. This Pulitzer prize-winning play charts two years of Anne’s life during the Nazi occupation and is an extraordinary tale of hope, courage and survival. Next Tuesday, May 8th, they will be having an outing to Milestones - Hampshire’s Living History Museum. The museum is on the outskirts of Basingstoke and takes the form of a typical High Street with all the shops you would expect to find in days gone by. The cost is £25 including travel and entrance. The Thursday Seniors’ Club will be holding their AGM this week, with the chiropodist attending the meeting.

It’s a bit late to mention, but it was fantastic to see so many people attending the Annual Village Meeting. I met quite a few new people – some were attending in advance of moving to the village, so I hope we were able to share our enthusiasm for Northiam. It was so encouraging to see so many of our societies on display, and I think everyone enjoyed seeing some of the achievements of pupils from our schools. I hope you were able to see the posters listing all the exciting events planned for the Jubilee celebrations, and that you plan to join in the fun.
