The home, which was opened after receiving planning permission in September 1987, has 33 bedrooms. An existing planning approval for an extension to the home has been granted by Arun District Council.

The latest application involve an extension with an internal floor area of 1,275sq m.

A statement by planning agent Mario Minchella Architects states: 'The building consists of two storeys to minimise its impact on the surroundings.

'The scale of the development is in keeping with its surroundings.

'The elevational style represents a traditional approach, using materials and details that are prevalent in this area of Walberton.

'Most of the existing trees and planting, especially to the boundaries, will be protected and retained.

'In addition, a substantial planting scheme is proposed.'

Looking after the residents in the extra rooms will create ten additional full-time and 15 part-time jobs. The home presently has 45 staff.

The home's existing vehicular and pedestrian accesses will be kept. The 14 current car parking spaces will be increased to 20.
