Oarsome Chance for youngsters at rowing event

A new charity is launching a youth rowing event at Cobnor.

On Friday, July 1, Oarsome Chance Foundation, a new charity working with disadvantaged youngsters in the three harbour areas of Cobnor, Langstone and Havant, and Portsmouth, will be running their first youth fun rowing event, The Oarsome Chance Challenge, at Cobnor Activity Centre.

The event will take place from 9.30 am to 5.30pm.

Five local schools will be participating, bringing 11-15 year olds to Cobnor for a day of fun rowing races together with other activities such as wall climbing, archery and indoor rowing.

The day will culminate with a prize giving at 5.45pm and a teacher’s rowing challenge at 6.15pm.

Local coastal rowing organisations have also been invited to take part.

Oarsome Chance Foundation are developing a number of projects within the Portsmouth area to benefit youngsters who for reasons of ability or circumstance would not otherwise have access to these activities.

Oarsome Chance Foundation uses the sport of coastal rowing and boat building projects to promote and encourage core values and skills for whole life benefits that can be used to improve health and education, combat obesity and enhance personal development and self-esteem. The charity works with schools and other youth projects building St Ayles Skiffs and then offering the opportunity to learn to row and enjoy the fruits of their labours.

Stuart McClellan, the charity’s MD, said: “The St Ayles Skiff was a design conceived to re-connect coastal communities with their water. They are built from a kit, with over 150 built in the UK and internationally, and we felt it was a great vehicle to use for our vocational learning programmes. Friday’s Fun Day Challenge will be the first time the groups we have been working with in schools have had an opportunity to row together. We are looking forward to a great day of fun and sport.”
