Said Chris, a campaigner for Cycle Lewes, which aims to improve facilities for cyclists around the county town: 'I was very moved when I heard about the little girl on a television programme and I wanted to help.'

The brothers will leave for their week-long ride on June 3. They will cycle from New York to Lewes in Sussex, Delaware, where they will meet that town's Mayor and give him a message of greeting from Lewes.

'I shall also be talking to Lewes, Delaware, people about their cycling facilities and taking in the State Parks which are very much like our National Parks. We shall soon, of course, be getting a National Park for the South Downs,' added Chris.

'Then we are cycling to nearby Seaford and on to Wilmington, all in Sussex. From there we catch the train back to New York.'
