Old and new at science week

Old versus new was a theme of Science and technology week at Charters Ancaster Preparatory School.

The old was represented by local model railway enthusiasts who brought along handmade scale models of Haynes Lane railway which is based on Colonel Stephens Light Railway and a P4 scale model of Epsom town Railway station both of which date from the mid 1920's.

The children were able to operate a shunting layout and learnt about the age of steam and the workings of a rail.

The new technology was represented by a scale model of a cutting edge high tech 21.5m Ericsson yacht which is currently competing in the Volvo Ocean Race due to finish at the end of June.

The children were able to watch a video about its construction, learning how its is able to achieve speeds of 40 Knots and how it smashed the 24 hour record last October averaging 47km an hour for 24 hours.

Mr Geoff Collins, Head of Science commented "Further highlights during the week will include learning about steam engines first hand at the Brede Steam Engine society and an original Model T Ford visiting the school. All of the activities are being linked to the children's studies and even the reception children will be learning basic French terms regarding what they have learnt from this week in their normal French studies."
