Open space takes root

TOWN mayor David Dyball has planted a tree to mark the completion of five years' work to create a new open space for the people of Littlehampton.

It was Mr Dyball's suggestion that the town council should take over part of the grounds of the former Rosemead School as an open space, after housing was built on the rest of the site.

He approached Arun District Council, which had been given the land by the developers, and eventually the transfer was agreed, for a nominal 5 sum.

Over the past five years, the area, now known as Rosemead Open Space, has been extensively improved by the town council, with landscaping, the removal of hedges and shrubs to open the land up and new planting. New play equipment for children is expected to be ready for the half-term holiday starting at the end of this month.

This week, in one of his last duties during his year as mayor, Mr Dyball planted the tree dedicating Rosemead Open Space to the people of Littlehampton.

A plaque alongside the tree describes the mayor's role in securing the park for the town council to "facilitate its regeneration and creation of a high quality open space for people of all ages to enjoy".
