Battle Observer Comment: Battle High Street is on the up again

AFTER more than two long years, it finally seems as if the former 1066 pub is one step closer to reopening.

The official plans are to turn the venue into a restaurant and bistro with, intriguingly, a tea and coffee museum upstairs.

Although it will be sad to see the loss of a pub, anything would be better than having to once again walk past that sad, shell of a building.

Well almost anything, perhaps apart from a unsympathetic-looking block of flats.

With Battle High Street on the up again, and a rejuvenated chamber of commerce doing all it can to help give traders a boost, this is great news for the town.

The plans have already been passed by town councillors, who would be the first to speak up if they felt the application didn’t do the town justice.

If Rother follows suit, here’s hoping the business manages to follow the example set by Fat Face, which won kudos after it showed how it respected the historic surroundings when it moved into the High Street earlier in the year.
