Bees failed to put sting into wonderful event

Carnival week went very well as always - the only hitch was the swarm of bees which triggered a last-minute change to the route of the colourful procession.

There wasn't just the risk of the bees going into "attack mode" from the procession if it had taken its original route - bees are now protected as they have been dying out worldwide in recent years.

No bees equals no pollination and no food, which is a worry for scientists and naturalists.

However those involved with the carnival took this in their stride and the result was still a splendid showing.

The theme Films produced some wonderfully creative ideas, including Peter Pan, Scooby Doo and Titanic.

In an age where carnivals have been hit hard by health and safety legislation and insurance making the cost of floats prohibitive, it's wonderful that Bexhill has retained such a vibrant annual event.

A big well done to the organisers - and to all those who took part.

Halt at Glynde Gap just the ticket

IT is really encouraging to see that a railway halt at Glyne Gap has been included in Rother District Council's revised regeneration strategy.

This will really open up Ravenside retail park to town centre residents, especially those who don't have access to a car.

It doesn't have to be a full-blown station - a basic platform and a ticket machine similar to the set-up at Normans Bay would be just the thing.

Also, those living on De La Warr Road might see a reduction in traffic congestion if more people use the train.

Nice idea, let's hope it gets put into action.
