Francis Maude: please vote for the popular Snack Wagon

I was delighted when Clare Ebelewicz - senior youth and older persons officer at Horsham District Council '“ told me recently that the Snack Wagon has made the shortlist for the Lloyds Community Fund 2013.

Readers will remember the launch of the new vehicle some 18 months ago, since when the SnackWagon has continued to be a familiar sight throughout the district. Now, with your help Clare tells me, this valuable youth service has the potential to be awarded a grant to support its continuation. She says: ‘The Snack Wagon offers mobile youth provision for young people aged between 13 and 18 years. The vehicle acts as an informal meeting place and aims to provide a safe space for young people as well as a base from which outreach and detached youth work can be delivered. It tends to visit those areas of the Horsham District where there are few facilities and/or where young people gather.

Youth workers engage with the young people on specific issues identified and provide information and advice on a range of topics - for example, sexual health, alcohol awareness and personal safety. They also act as young people’s ‘advocate’ in liaising with other agencies and community groups.

The Snack Wagon is a joint initiative between Horsham District Council and West Sussex Youth Service.

The community as a whole also benefits from the Snack Wagon provision because it signposts young people to services they need, helps improve their health and well-being, reduces anti-social behaviour and increases cohesion.

Please vote for the Snack Wagon! The number of votes cast in each community will decide how the Community Fund awards will be allocated. The first and second placed community groups will each get a Community Fund award of £3,000.
