How easy is it to cut your carbon footprint by ten percent?

This week I signed up to the '10:10' climate pledge '“ a commitment to cut my carbon emissions by as much as I can, in order to help towards a 10% cut in Britain's carbon emissions by the end of 2010.

I believe that if we are going to ask the Government and businesses to cut their carbon emissions, it is important to show that we, as individuals, are willing and able to do our bit. Is it really that difficult to take a few less car journeys a week, or to remember to turn the lights off? Or now that the Eurostar is back up and running from Ashford, isn't it quite simple to take the train instead of flying to our holiday destinations? Even switching to green energy now only takes five minutes.

This is a crucial time for the environment. The UN Copenhagen Summit this year is a huge opportunity to stop climate change, and to finally get the world's biggest polluters to commit to action. With progressive politicians like Barack Obama and Gordon Brown in power, this is a perfect time to achieve real commitments.
