Kevin King: Enough of the Saturday night singing contests

HERE’S a question for you. Have we had enough of Saturday night singing competitions on our televisions?

HERE’S a question for you. Have we had enough of Saturday night singing competitions on our televisions?

I only ask because the completely delightful and hugely talented Rebecca Ferguson joined me for breakfast on Splash FM this week, and it was during our conversation that it dawned on me that although The X Factor has produced some fabulous stars, the majority of them didn’t actually win the competition.

Indeed, Rebecca is a good example along with likes of Olly Murs, JLS and the biggest boy band in the world, One Direction.

The present series has tried to boost its ratings by introducing another level of jeopardy, with the ‘chairs round’ (although that was not dissimilar to The Voice on the other side).

Even Gary Barlow seems to have realised that he does not want to be part of the band playing Abide With Me as the good ship X slips beneath the waves and announced his departure from the show during one of the live finals.

Meanwhile, over on the other side on The Voice both Jessie J and Danny O’Donoghue have called time on their judging to be replaced by Kylie Minogue and Ricky Wilson from Kaiser Chiefs, and the show has yet to produce any lasting star.

So, what’s the answer? Is our appetite for discovering new stars satiated with Britain’s Got Talent?

What should be the box on a Saturday night? Another reality show, perhaps, or have we had enough?

If you have the answer, I know of someone who would love to talk to you – a Mr Cowell, who, you never know, might just make you rich!

Talking of judges, one of Louis Walsh’s better acts are joining me for breakfast soon, as I am looking forward to meeting Boyzone again.
