‘This has gone on for far too long’

THE above words of Rye MP Amber Rudd will be reflected in the thoughts of many Rye residents who must by now feel that they are never going to get a new supermarket.

Action was badly needed and if Amber can find some solution to ending the stalemate then she will have done a massive service to all those who are desperate for more choice as to where to do their weekly shop without having to leave Rye for Hastings or Tenterden.

We can only hope that the supermarket giants will now see some reason and sense and put the needs of the Rye community first rather than continuing this long running and complex fight.

Our lead story about parking on pavements has sparked a strong reaction and views both from those who see it as a dangerous hazard and traders who say a balance must be found if Rye is not to die a death as a vibrant market town.

The response can be seen by the mailbag on this page and from calls we have taken this week.

The town’s Highways Forum meets to discuss the issue on Monday night. Let’s hope they can find a way forward.

One thing is certain - Rye has the infrastructure of a medieval town and this issue is not going to go away any time soon.
