VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Get involved and make a difference in the community

Volunteer Now! has over 100 organisations from across the Arun district who are looking for volunteers and nearly 250 different volunteer opportunities currently available.

There are roles in offices, schools and children’s centres; theatres, galleries and museums; hospitals and charity shops.

You could work with young people or old people; with children, families or animals.

You could volunteer indoors, or get dirty out in the countryside. Whatever you interests and availability, there will be an opportunity to suit you!

Here are just a few of the opportunities you could be involved with:

Treasurer/trustee – Littlehampton Shopmobility

Littlehampton Shopmobility exists to ensure that people with mobility problems enjoy their shopping experience and help to maintain their independent lives.

They provide the hire and sale of wheelchairs and scooters and the sale of items to improve the quality of life of those with disability.

They are looking for a treasurer to join their friendly board of trustees.

You will be required to use the SAGE system, bank monies, attend four to six weekly board meetings with a report on the finances and to attend the AGM with all the relevant paperwork and answer any questions from members as required.

Retail shop assistant (Littlehampton) – Save The Children

Save the Children run world-class programmes to save children’s lives and challenge world leaders to keep to their promises to give children a brighter future.

Their community shops raise over £8 million each year for Save the Children, and also raise vital awareness of their work.

Volunteering in one of their shops could involve the following: sorting, sizing, pricing and displaying donations for sale; helping to create eye-catching window displays and serving customers on the till.

They are looking for more volunteers for their shop in Littlehampton, could you help?

Volunteer driver – Arun Co-ordinated Community Transport

Arun Co-ordinated Community Transport provides easy, affordable transport to people who are unable to use public transport by means of minibuses, a dial-a-ride service and a social car scheme.

More volunteer drivers are required to drive their own car but they may also be requested to drive one of the project minibuses.

You must have a clean driving licence, be flexible, outgoing and able to get on with people.

Walks leader – Arundel Museum Society

Arundel Museum exists to acquire, conserve and display objects related to Arundel’s history and heritage.

The society wants to create a gateway to the past in an exciting and inspiring learning environment which is accessible to all.

hey also offer guided town walks during the summer which are either run in response to a group booking, or as part of an advertised walks programme.

They are looking for volunteers to allow them to extend these walks.

The walk leader is required to learn a set route, and deliver a ‘walking lecture’ on the selected aspect of local history.

Group size is between eight and 20 people, and a second volunteer accompanies the group as steward. Training will be provided.
