VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Plea made to support cancer shop

The Cancer United Shop, in Wick Street, is appealing for people to join its ranks and become a retail assistant.

The role would involved becoming part of the sales team and helping with the day-to-day running of the store. Jobs would include stock rotation, steaming garments and serving customers.

Shift times range from 9am to 1pm or 1pm to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am to 2pm Saturdays. At the start or the end of the day there will be some light cleaning duties such as vacuuming the shop floor and dusting the display units. An induction and some health and safety training will be given.

The Littlehampton and Worthing wing of the British Red Cross is appealing for new ‘home from hospital’ volunteers to sign up and join.

The role would involve volunteers offering a helping hand to those who have just come out of hospital.

Applicants would also be there to provide emotional and practical support, which could range from companionship and confidence building, to going out shopping for the recovering person and light housework.

The Royal Voluntary Service, is seeking for people to come out and support elderly residents in their areas as part of the organisation’s good neighbours West Sussex scheme.

Activities are varied and will depend on the need of the individual. Examples are shopping, providing transport, and simpler everyday practical tasks in the home to social visits and outings,

Charity organisation Save the Children is seeking more shop assistants to back its outlets across the area.

Volunteers are needed for Age UK’s home visiting service. The aim of the project is to reduce isolation experienced by older residents in the community.

Volunteers will visit people once a week for about 90 minutes during a 12-week period. They will provide comfort and a friendly face to talk to.
