DAWN GRACIE It's taking part that counts '“ unless you win!

AWARD season is well and truly upon us, and the television has been awash with footage from glitzy red carpet moments and magazines are having a field day with '˜who's wearing what' and '˜who's with who' images.

It’s almost impossible to avoid the hype and, if you’re like me, then you’ll love watching the award ceremonies live for those moments of sheer joy for the winners and painfully embarrassing moments of the humble non-winning nominees.

I have myself been one of the unfortunates and have had to bear the grin of congratulations for the winner, while pretending not to be bitterly disappointed at losing out, but I have also been on the other side of that excruciating moment and have been the triumphant winner.

Either way, merely being nominated for an award for anything is a huge honour and there is no higher form of testimonial from your colleagues or customers.

For people to even take time out to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard to nominate you is confirmation that you’re doing a great job, and so being the winner or not is irrelevant. In the words of the famous phrase, ‘it’s not the winning that counts, it’s the taking part’... until you’re the winner!
