Disabled anger at parking wardens

I AM writing concerning the deliberate targeting of disabled drivers by parking wardens in and around Worthing.

Wardens are toting satchels crammed with the current issue of the Disabled Drivers' Guide, which they produce if any driver should question the legality of any ticket issued.

These guides have not been sent to every disabled driver, who cannot therefore be expected to know every detail of the regulations pertaining to parking.

This arrangement results in a considerable income to the authorities, amounting to 70 per ticket, issued for minor infringements such as forgetting to set the time on a cardboard "clock" which must be displayed in the proper manner, or else.

In fact, there are not less than 14 possible infringements relating specifically to disabled drivers, which are set out on a scrappy piece of paper given out with each ticket.

Disabled drivers, by the very nature of things, would probably be elderly, be in pain or have difficulty in movement, forgetful and possibly amnesiac, yet they are the specific target of these parking wardens who are not allowed to use either common sense or pity.

The only remedy available to those caught by this system is to appeal, which will cost the authorities a sum far in excess of the 70 they will eventually receive, with or without the use of the bailiffs.

Victims should quote the current government website pertaining to disabled drivers which states that they may park on single or double yellow lines.

Full stop, no ifs or buts.

The website does not specify the myriad circumstances where to do so is illegal.

The whole matter is shameful, bureaucratic, disgusting, and victimises the poor and the helpless.
