Falmer

VISITOR: At the weekend we had visitors from Belgium, who luckily for them had booked to travel through the tunnel and also were lucky to have an ap on their phone to enable them to avoid the kilometres of lorry queues due to the strike at the French ports in protest at the extra work that is expected by customs if and when Brexit goes through. We are saturated by news of what we might expect on this side of the channel but little from the European side. The weather was not good for our visitors but they loved just meandering around the little shops in the North Laines of Brighton.

EVERYTHING COMES IN THREES: My mother always told me that everything of intent comes in threes and maybe they did for us last week when we changed our day to go swimming at the Prince Regent Swimming Pool from our usual time, to find the pool was closed, so no swim; secondly that same very evening I was looking forward to a baking demonstration at Falmer Ladies’ evening from Tim Cutress but sadly this too had to be cancelled due to the village hall heating failing; thirdly the concert planned for Saturday March 23 which was going to be a recital of One Piano, Four Hands has had to be rescheduled due to one of the pianists breaking her wrist; it must be the worst nightmare for a pianist. But all is not lost we have the wonderful John Bruzon stepping into the breech to play us a programme of Scarlatti, Granados, Chopin and Liszt, still to take place at St Laurence’s at 5.30pm.

This will be the second piano concert in a week that I will have attended the first was at the Dome when Steven Osborne played Rachmaninov’s Concerto no 3. I had read that this piece is a very difficult piece to play, but Steven Osborne’s fingers just flew over the keyboard and we were so lucky to have been given tickets just three rows from the front to see this accomplished pianist’s expertise.
