LETTER: Amazed at loss of a patrol

Having been a resident of Ayshe Court Drive, Horsham, for some 47 years, I think that I am in a position to offer my thoughts upon the wisdom of the county council to stop funding a uniformed crossing patrol at the junction of Ayshe Court Drive and Depot Road (WSCT June 2nd).

During term time this is a through route for young children and their parents making their way to and from Kingslea Primary School in Harwood Road. And crossing busy Depot Road can be a dangerous undertaking at times.

For example, around four or five years ago, a pedestrian living in The Poplars who was attempting to cross Depot Road at this very spot died after being involved in a collision with a car emerging from nearby Burford Road.

On the other side of the coin, parents collecting their young children in mid to late afternoon arrive carrying the mandatory scooter for their offspring - often leaving youngsters to progress unsupervised towards Depot Road.

Many parents natter as they walk along or have a mobile phone glued to one ear - leaving their high-spirited little devils to do their own thing - often trampling on our manicured lawns.

As the management of both Bourns Court and its sister block, Lyon Court are governed by riparian law - which relates to the adjoining lake, both blocks of flats have had to take precautions by having ‘Warning’ signs erected by the lakeside - just in case an overzealous youngster should fall in - on his/her return home from school.

Given this background, I find it amazing that any council should have assessed the Depot Road crossing and found it necessary to withdraw a paid ‘lollipop’ man or woman - on grounds of cost.

To quote a much over-used phrase, ‘It’s an accident waiting to happen’.

We have already had one adult fatality at this junction - how long do we have to wait for another - this time a young child?
