LETTER: Dumped rail passenger

On the evening of November 30, rail services to Eastbourne were disrupted. I was advised to catch a train to Brighton. It was only four carriages long and passengers were crushed in like sardines. We were told to alight at Haywards Heath and catch the train to Eastbourne '“ but no train available.

I got back on another train to Brighton and waited there for the Eastbourne train. It departed at 10.28pm. I was advised that it stopped at Lewes, Polegate and Eastbourne.

I left the train at what I was informed was the next stop, Polegate – only to find I was at Berwick, an unscheduled stop. The station was unmanned, dark, intimidating and isolated.

I was really upset. It was late at night, lonely and horrible.

I don’t think I will risk Southern trains again. I will catch National Express; at least I will feel safe.

My heart goes out to the poor commuters who have to endure such chaos on a regular basis. Lack of any information and the feeling of vulnerability is very hard and leaves scars.
