LETTER: End of Britain as great nation

Your report of the speech of Mr Rudd in the West Sussex County Times painted a very rosy picture of the 'benefits' of Britain's EU membership.

The reality however is very different and Mr Rudd failed to mention the many disadvantages of Britain’s membership.

I believe the EU is very undemocratic and many decisions are taken in secret and never debated properly in either the European Parliament or in national Parliaments.

It is also very bureaucratic with myriads of rules and regulations adding unnecessary costs to business and industry.

The EU is also corrupt and extravagant and the budgets have not been signed off for 20 years.

Another grave disadvantage for Britain is the way our fishing and agricultural have been decimated because of EU policies.

Britain is the second biggest contributor to the budget after Germany and leaving the EU would be beneficial when we stopped making the contributions.

Thanks to Gordon Brown, Britain did not join the Euro zone which has caused great hardship and suffering particularly to Greece.

The forthcoming referendum gives Britain a great opportunity to leave the EU otherwise I fear the march towards political union will gather pace and would be the end of Britain as a great sovereign nation.
