LETTER: Lame excuse

Following the District Planning Committee charade on 16th February perhaps it is high time that Mid Sussex District Council admits that its 'lack of a 5-year land supply for housing development' is entirely the result of its corporate lethargy and procrastination causing consequential havoc for all Mid Sussex communities.

Furthermore the council’s continued lame excuse that it is reluctant to spend tax-payers’ money on planning appeals is really a matter of ‘self-inflicted wounds’ caused by MSDC’s incredible incompetence.

Parish councils have strived long and hard to complete Neighbourhood Plans, spending more council tax funds in the process, only to have their efforts completely negated by MSDC’s lack of a 5-year land supply and consequent inability to prevent predatory incursions by developers eager to make money out of the RH16 postal code!

This should result in resignations and elections to reinvigorate and provide a council that can support and lead the district.

If this is unpalatable then I suggest MSDC devolves its planning function to one of the development companies presently plaguing Mid Sussex and who seem to have more clout and organisation!

Alternatively, perhaps the concept of a unitary authority could be trialled in Mid Sussex with local government shared between parishes, towns and county cutting out the ‘lame duck middleman’!
