LETTER: Minority spoil life for majority

I fear Gerald McMullen's belief that education would improve Horsham's litter problem [WSCT 2nd March] is misplaced. On television, radio and in the press, '˜education' is constantly put forward as the answer to all manner of anti-social behaviour and ills in society.

Although I don’t have a degree in Sociology, the reality is that life is spoilt for the majority because such problems are caused and perpetuated by a significant minority who, despite education, would continue to [insert your own examples here]. And they will still drop litter even within sight of a litter bin.

Litter will always be with us and the only realistic solution (to supplement HDC’s doubtless under-resourced waste management department) is to have more people picking it up; either every one of us as we pass something we could conveniently put in a bin or take home - or co-ordinated volunteer efforts. As to the latter, these could be better publicised.

Although I belong to HDC’s ‘Adopt a Street’ scheme, I was unaware of the Big Spring clean up 3rd-5th March until I read about it in the WSCT… on 2nd March. Too late.

As to the disgraceful state of the A24 (gateway to Horsham), I’m sure I and others would be happy to spend the occasional day clearing the verges and branches of litter, although we would hope the council would cone off the adjacent traffic lanes for us first.

If the WSCT would like an article on my ‘Adopt a Street’ experience (which would be more constructive than this abridged rant), it has only to ask.
