LETTER: Political correctness

My attempts to place an advert for a workshop for singers and instrumentalists in Hailsham Church, East Sussex, on May 22 were thwarted last week.

The town’s major supermarket that prides itself on community involvement told me that their policy was not to advertise “anything religious”.

I belong to Sussex Harmony, a quire of keen amateur singers and instrumentalists.

We are dedicated to keeping alive the music that was performed in the county’s rural churches and chapels prior to 1850 when the Oxford Movement threw out the village bands and their vibrant music – known as West Gallery music – installing organs recommending approved hymns in their place.

How many more musical events are going to be difficult to draw to people’s attention when political correctness goes this far?
