LETTER: What happened to our democracy?

I am more than surprised to see that our local '˜representative' in Westminster, Nick Herbert MP, is to be a leading light in the Prime Minister's '˜Keep Britain in the EU' campaign.

We were promised changes would be made to the EU and powers returned to the UK before the referendum, if not the Prime Minister would campaign to leave the EU.

However, even while the sham, smoke and mirrors, negotiations are currently ‘on stage’, it appears both the Prime Minister and our Member of Parliament have decided they need to begin convincing you and we need to stay under the thumb of the EU politburo before another migration crisis or Eurozone crisis or both upset their plans.

Their ‘Project Fear’ will issue bloodcurdling warnings and ignore facts like; we are the fifth, soon to become the fourth, largest economy in the world, that trade with the EU is in decline and our trade with the rest of the world is growing.

Nick Herbert and David Cameron will try to instil fear about trade outside of the EU despite the fact we are creating more jobs than the rest of the EU put together or the fact that a lot of our success is due to our staying out of the EU’s currency.

They will still try and tell us that Britain is ‘too small’ to go it alone. In addition, Nick and Dave will try to make us afraid for our safety, hiding the fact that slashing budgets for our Armed Forces, our border controls and our police are a bigger threat to UK security than leaving the EU ever will be.

However, we will undoubtedly see both Nick Herbert and David Cameron try to tell us that the only people who will be happy if we leave the EU will be Putin and ISIS, that we need to belong to the EU’s Rapid Response Force to stay safe and ignore the fact that being in the EU did not make Paris any safer, that EU countries are racing to impose border controls and the EU’s disastrous immigration policies are causing major cultural and safety problems all over the EU.

Making us afraid will be their tactic and Nick Clegg, a leading Europhile, has stated that fear of the unknown is a powerful, and legitimate, emotion. It will be utilised to ensure you and I comply with what our elected ‘representatives’ feel is good for us and we can expect an emotional, highly negative, campaign, because Cameron’s team have discovered ‘negativity works’.

So, it will be interesting to see how Nick explains away the fact that EU rules and regulations actually hinders our security especially when we see examples like the time, effort and cost our Home Secretary had to put in just to get people like Abu Qatada out of this country.

I also wonder how many constituents our local MP has contacted to see whether he is representing us when he is leading our ‘euro-sceptic’ Prime Minister’s campaign to stay in the EU, before the staged negotiations have barely begun.

I wonder what happened to our ‘democracy’ ?
