A liability to the Labour party

Like many Labour Party members and supporters, we were appalled and disgusted at the news that Cllr Watson had defected to the Conservative Party though not surprised.

Cllr Watson has for some time been at loggerheads with the local party and has persistently misrepresented the Labour Party on the local council.

The party had consistently failed to address this issue with the inevitable outcome.

The statements made in justification of his defection say most of what one needs to know about the councillor.

In desiring to be at ‘the centre of things’ Cllr Watson betrays the fact that it is all about himself and his own self aggrandisement as was his acceptance of the mayorship in controversial circumstances.

The idea that one can only properly represent ones constituents by being a member of the ruling party is both self serving and demeaning of other councillors who offer a principled stance to constituents. It would be interesting to hear from Cllr Watson exactly what contribution to the improvement of his constituents lives he has made.

This latest act only adds weight to the belief held by many party members at the time and commented about on this page that a deal had been done by Cllr Watson and Cllr Maynard ‘ie – the mayorship for your support’.

The actions of the councillor to dupe constituents into voting for him on the basis that he stood for certain principles; to deceive active members into working hard to get him elected; and to discuss his concerns with a member of an opposition party while failing to inform his own party of his issues of concern are contemptible.

It is these kinds of action by our elected representatives which bring politics and politicians into disrepute amongst the electorate.

On the positive side there is much relief in the local Labour Party that it is no longer to have its message misrepresented by a closet Conservative.

We doubt that Cllr Watson will prove to be as substantial an asset to the Tories as he has been a liability to the Labour Party.
