A stable world

No doubt someone will accuse me of an ‘ism’ or ‘phobia’. Hopefully, not those who read ‘East Preston and Kingston in the Great War’ published to mark its anniversary, for, at the time, one of the best Christians in the village was a Jew named Israel Zangwill.

What may appear remarkable to some people is the fact that Zangwill helped resettle Jews from Europe, across the world, when Israel was a figment of imagination, and those British soldiers who fought and died in that theatre of war, were marching through Mesopotamia into Palestine and its capital Jerusalem.

After the war Britain ostentatiously took over this area, as a Protectorate, when its population included around 80,000 Christians, and a similar number of Jews, with nearly 600,000 Muslims. Britain had no effective control of immigration, and persecuted Jews from Europe settled there with obvious results – especially as kibbutzim took over great swathes of land.

What can only be termed a civil war began in the 30s and has continued ever since. In 1947 a reasonable partition of the country was proposed and should have been enforced. What now exists is a folly.

What that means for us, anyone may decide. But if we want a ‘sustainable’ country we need a stable democratic world.
