This was the first charity event of the year raising a fantastic £800 for ‘The Mary How Trust’.

This is a local trust set up in Pulborough that offers Health Screening. The trust’s mission is to make health screening and healthy living advice accessible to all.

The ‘Induction Party’ is held every year to welcome new students to the college, giving all sixth formers a chance to get to know one another at the start of the new academic year, and provides a great opportunity to raise some valuable funds for one of this year’s chosen Sixth Form College charities.

The college’s 250 students had fun dressing up and dancing the night away. The theme of the party was ‘Around the World’ and students dressed up in a plethora of costumes.

The evening was a complete success due to the hard work of the Sixth Form Student Charity Committee who organised the event and particular thanks go to DJ’s Chris Oliver and William Lee who kept everyone dancing.

This is the seventh year running that Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form College students have chosen to support the Macmillan’s ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ event. An amazing total of just over £1000 has been raised for the Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre.

An open invitation to the coffee morning was sent to all sixth formers, teaching and support staff. For a £2.00 donation, participants were served coffee, tea or hot chocolate and a range of homemade cakes.

With over 500 students in the Sixth Form College a significant amount of money was raised to help Macmillan provide vital support to those affected by cancer locally.

This event was led by Peer Educators/Peer Listeners, our A-Level Health and Social Care Students, together with Y13 Liaison Committee students who encouraged students to bake, with our boarding students spending their evening enrichment time baking.

The students wanted to raise awareness of all forms of cancer and how it affects so many people and their families. Information from Macmillan highlighted that: “In Sussex each day 23 people find out the devastating news that they have cancer.

“By 2030 there will be 121,400 people living with or beyond cancer in Sussex, that’s enough to fill Brighton and Hove Albion’s football stadium nearly four times.”

Macmillan Cancer Support is developing a new Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre in Brighton that will provide expert care and emotional support together with innovative cancer services for people affected by cancer across Sussex.

Currently there are 187 Macmillan nurses and professionals working in the area.

The Sixth Form College Students would like to extend their thanks to local businesses and parents in Steyning, Henfield and Partridge Green who gave very generously to this year’s raffle, including donations and vouchers from Country House, Steyning Book Shop, the Pizza Oven, the White Horse, Sea Whites, Al Badder Gents Hair Salon, Rhubarb Café, Jengers Craft Bakery, Cocoa Loco, Body Matters and the Bloomsbury Clinic.

Our star prize has been donated by Stable Antiques, Storrington and is a flight for two in a Hot Air Balloon.

Students and the school are very proud of raising such a significant sum for two very worthwhile local charities.
