So, the Royal Bank of Scotland (much of which is publically owned) is seven billion pounds in the red on last year's trading, the result we are told of previous mismanagement. The fabric of our schools is crumbling and many schools just do not have enough money.

But we must not worry, as bankers will continue to receive bonus payments and the government, who know best, will, we assume, continue to find money to fund new grammars in deprived areas like Sevenoaks.

Politicians continue to assure us they are working for everyone and every part of the country and campaigning for a just and fair society, but do we believe them?
