Artificial Arun

I write regarding Mary Lees’ question “Do we need Arun?” (Gazette letters, June 20).

When I moved to Rustington in 1968, our local council was Worthing Rural, a much more sensible arrangement geographically.

We then became Arun, under Ted Heath’s reorganisation – a purely artificial invention, as a river is a boundary, not a central point.

I have heard it said that people who live west of the river think more money is spent east of the river and vice versa.

My own personal gripe was the permission given to demolish three lovely houses in Woodlands Avenue, Rustington, to be replaced by a block of 24 flats, which two years later, still stand empty.

So, let us have a debate. Do we need Arun? Who does it serve?
