Band will play on

I AM writing to support Maurice Ozanne in his plea for a bandstand in Littlehampton (Gazette, August 19).

I, like him, have played in many bandstands, both here and abroad and, of late, their popularity is returning. My wife and I regularly visit Horsham where, throughout the summer months, there is a full programme of band concerts in the Carfax Bandstand on Saturdays, morning and afternoon, and every Sunday afternoon in the Podium Bandstand in Horsham Park.

No fees are paid to the bands, who willingly give their time, creating a lot of interest and pleasure to those who listen.

I wonder how many people in Littlehampton are aware of the existence of the Littlehampton Concert Band, which has a membership of more than 50 players, playing all kinds of music, and rehearses every Thursday evening in The Trading Post, courtesy of The Body Shop headquarters?

There is no doubt in these days of tight budgets priorities have to be considered but, if Littlehampton is to be recognised as the place to be, free live entertainment, of whatever type, can only but enhance its

attractiveness as a resort.

The recent Armed Forces Day was a tremendous success and proves there is a community spirit out there waiting to be entertained.
