Bells are the answer

AS Penny Clear writes (Gazette letters, last week), cycling is healthy. So is walking, except on paths shared with cyclists.

The obvious solution is to provide separate paths or, on the Littlehampton Promenade, to mark out separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians. However, Arun District Council disagrees.

Its plan for the Promenade is to allow cyclists and pedestrians to mingle. Arun’s representative told me this is because pedestrians might stray on to the cycle path, as she did once on Brighton Promenade: if we were all using the same space we’d probably exercise more care, and cyclists might pedal more slowly.

I commend the solution proposed by Penny Clear: that all cyclists using the Promenade should be required to have a cycle bell fitted.
