Bexhill cyclists are very considerate

As Rother cycling champion, and as Rother council’s Green councillor, we have followed with interest the comments on the Observer’s Facebook site about cycling on Bexhill Promenade in response to a letter in the Observer.

We disagree strongly with the writer’s views. In the early stages of the lockdown, walkers, runners and cyclists had problems observing social distancing but this is not now the case.

On Saturday 1st of May, Councillor Thomas took an inventory on the Western Promenade.

Out of 19 cyclists noted, only one cyclist rode too close to walkers, and 3 individual pedestrians did likewise.

Some dog walkers had forgotten to put their dogs back on their leads ready for the summer.

Throughout Bexhill, in the shopping streets and the parks, the same picture prevails. Bexhillians, whether cyclists or not, are very law-abiding and considerate, whether on foot or on bikes, though some may need a gentle reminder on occasion.

So the shared space is working very much as intended.

A wonderful mix of scooter riders, buggie pushers, roller blades, people on mobility scooters, dog walkers, pedestrians and cyclists of all ages are smiling, sharing and caring. This is the Bexhill of today.

And the very young cyclists, responsibly supervised by their parents and grandparents, are a sight which bodes well for a less polluted planet in the future.
