Book explains all

THE headline “Good news for fort, but why was it built?”, on Nicholas Myer’s letter (Gazette, October 27) is answered in the book Littlehampton through the Wars, by Jack Thompson.

He wrote: “At this time was was some fear of trouble once more with the French, for Napoleon III was breathing dire threats, and Palmerston was setting in motion the preparation of defences against any trouble, should it come about.”

It was only after the outbreak of the Crimean War that the French became our uneasy allies.
