Bring on Morrisons

MORRISONS coming to Littlehampton is indeed good news for the town.

We are an established destination town for day trips and now food shopping, too. Consumers and other businesses will benefit. And it doesn’t make the rumours about Asda at Roundstone go away.

There will be truly credible competition to Tesco, who have a too dominant position in this area.

Morrisons’ pricing strategy is different and we should see price wars, particularly in fuel. They are one of only two of the big supermarket chains, the other being The Co-operative, who own their own farms and food processing, abattoirs, vegetable preparation and processing etc., which gives them several advantages .

Planning permission will undou-btedly be granted, but it is to be hoped that among the conditions, Arun District Council will ensure that a high proportion of the boasted £20m will be spent and stay in Littlehampton, or at least in West Sussex.

Presumably the site purchase price is a part of the £20m - and that will go to France!

Is this the final key to the new Lyminster/Fitzalan link road with its railway crossing? There are many other aspects, too, for example, will aggregates be brought in through our harbour? Will south of England contractors be preferred? Will the structural steel come from British steel mills?

But we should bear in mind that Morrisons is coming largely because they have been promised several thousand new customers right on their doorstep. The north Littlehampton developments must now proceed immediately with all that entails.
