Bypass possible?

I HAVE followed the stories about the ASDA supermarket at Ferring, through to the latest article (May 3). In this report, a quote attributed to county councillor Dr James Walsh, chairman of a group of county council officer discussing highway matters in east Arun, implies innocence of the planning process, but it strikes a thin line of argument.

As members of both county and district councils, they have made concerted efforts to drive forward the rash of provocative developments now established along the A259, and so ignorance of the consequences is hardly apt.

Oddly, every other member of the public, it seems, is fully conversant with the situation that, once a developer is granted planning permission, only the obligatory statutory regulations are then applicable.

What now appears more incomprehensible is that, after the fact, a “study on issues affecting the whole length of the A259 from the Goring roundabout to the River Arun” is now to be undertaken.

I recall that, only some months ago, Arun cabinet member for planning councillor Ricky Bower received some criticism for having voiced an opinion that a new Littlehampton bypass should be promoted.

Is it possible that the not yet authorised Lyminster bypass might be extended north of the railway line, to link with the dual carriageway at the A259 bridge, thus giving a more appropriate gateway for the developments?
