Bypasses ruin our pleasant land

ONCE again, we have the circus of local and national politicians getting wound up about slowish traffic around Arundel. But businesses in Sussex don't need new bypasses.

We do well and attract good staff in large part because West Sussex is a pleasant place to live and not covered in bypasses.

I know from direct experience of running my travel company, Projects Abroad, which has 500 staff worldwide, that a specialist labour force is best attracted to a pleasant place to live.

They are not attracted by bypasses which destroy woodland and ruin wetlands.

No one objects to small improvements, such as a footbridge instead of the pedestrian lights, as suggested by Bill Barwell (Gazette letters, July 29), but the massive environmental destruction entailed by a major bypass to the existing bypass is totally unnecessary.

We business-people have no objection to looking across to Arundel Castle and cathedral and we welcome travelling at 20 miles per hour for a change!

Most people who live in this area are tired of the misconceived idea that whizzing from place to place is always desirable.

Business in this area is perfectly happy to relax and enjoy Sussex!
