Campers' praise

MY husband and I have recently been camping at Daisyfields campsite in Littlehampton again, which we enjoyed very much.

We have been visiting this campsite for many years now but this time were amazed to hear that the council was considering closing the site in order to build hundreds of housing units on it.

How could this even be thought to be a desirable option?

The site occupied by Daisyfields is absolutely beautiful, an oasis of green calm amidst much housing and is a haven for wildlife.

While we were there we were delighted to see rabbits, foxes, bats and many birds; this is what we go away for.

To wake up in the early morning and be part of the lives of animals is something to treasure – it is something which doesn't happen when you spend your time in a town house.

Littlehampton is a relatively unspoilt English seaside town but, sadly, it is short of affordable holiday accommodation.

The other campsite in the town has decided to go upmarket and become a Caravan Club members-only site, which doesn't take touring tents and has a hefty annual membership fee.

The Premier Inn and Travelodge option is extremely expensive and the Youth Hostel, too, is rather expensive.

So, what is left for those who have limited funds but want to enjoy the delights of Littlehampton?

Nothing, except for the lovely Daisyfields campsite.

There is already a problem in this country of people travelling to other countries which often works out cheaper and with the advantage of sunnier climes.

Everything possible should be done to encourage those people to vacation in this country as much as possible.

With the economy such as it is right now, it is even more desirable that every means possible should be employed to this end.

In fact, there should be more campsites developed; they would surely be very popular.

We rue the day that the one which used to be down Eldon Way, by the river, was built on.

It was an ideal site which we camped on for many years.

The local businesses benefit from the increased trade from the campers which number thousands each year, particularly the local supermarkets, since camping entails buying food to cook.

Surely you want people to share your lovely town, even if it is for short periods throughout the year?

The Rutherfords, who run the Daisyfields site, are an extremely conscientious, pleasant couple who keep the site in very good order and are excellent, helpful hosts.

The loss to them of their business would be heartbreaking; it is not just a business but part of their lives.

We hope the council will decide to keep this campsite, so that those of us who prefer to spend our vacation outdoors can enjoy many more years enjoying the tranquillity of the area and of your pretty town.
