Car parks are too difficult to get into

AMIDST all the uproar about increased parking charges I should like to say this. I do not visit the town very often now and this is not because of parking charges it is because of the difficulty in accessing both Mount Street and the Market car parks.

The reason for this is on street parking which extends from Mount Street to the end of the High Street and beyond.

The decision some years ago to remove short term parking on the Abbey Green is the cause of this, the Green was within easy reach of all four banks and the main Post Office.

It is a source of amazement to me that no one has died as a result of the daily gridlock in the High Street as a result of the on street parking.

Once traffic has been brought to a standstill, there is nowhere to go and no amount of blue light flashing can have any effect on a street blocked by stationary cars.

I can’t honestly believe that people are not using the town because of parking charges but more likely for the same reasons that I don’t.

Budgens/Jempsons have been refunding parking charges for purchases over £5 for years so if other traders are considering going down the same route a similar amount of money should be considered.
