Charity golf day for South African children

With the kind co-operation and assistance of Wildwood Golf and Country Club, the Rotary Club of Cranleigh recently held its first charity golf day on Friday 23 May.

The profits will be used to support a literacy project for young people in South Africa.

The day included bacon rolls and coffee on arrival, an 18 hole Stableford competition, a two course carvery meal on completion and excellent prizes to be won, on and off the course.

There was also a putting competition after the 18 holes had been played.

After dinner, a raffle draw was organised with thanks to Woburn, Bramley, Cranleigh and Wildwood Golf Clubs for donating rounds of golf and local businesses Roger Coupe, David Manns, 107 Restaurant, The Parrot Inn, Celebration Cakes and Rotarians donating a range of prizes.

“Although the weather was not kind, a great day was had by all involved and over £800 was raised toward the cost of funding a Literacy Project in South Africa,” said event organiser Andrew Kolmar.

The Rotary Club of Port Alfred is running a Literacy Project in Nemato, South Africa, a town of some 25,000 people, many of whom suffer great poverty.

The target group is 9 and 10 year-olds, most of whom are undernourished and have never seen a book or held a pencil.

The Cranleigh Club is committed to raising up to £1,750 to equip a classroom with books, reading materials and furniture.

The Club’s next major fundraising event is the annual 10K Race, which will be held on Sunday, 6 July.
