Collyer’s bursary scheme recognises success

ursaries were awarded to a student from each of the key local partner schools and to students achieving top grades from schools north, south, east and west of Horsham.

Sebastian Chenery (Priory Dorking), Hugh Crook (Holy Trinity), Sophie Dawson (Millais), Sam Holden (Forest); Natasha Kingdon (Steyning Grammar), Aiden Marks (Tanbridge House), Grace Maxted (Glebelands in Cranleigh) and Lydia Wilson (Warden Park in Cuckfield) each received a cheque for £500.

Collyer’s Principal, Dr Jackie Johnston explained: “We wanted to reward some of our new outstanding students for their academic excellence in year 11, while recognising the superb work of our excellent partner schools. As a ‘magnet college’ attracting students from right across the region, it was only fitting that we also rewarded students coming to us from farther afield. I’m sure the £500 will be put to good use to help support their education or extra-curricular activities while at Collyer’s”.

Sebastian Chenery was delighted: “‘I owe a lot to all my teachers and friends back at the Priory”

Hugh Crook added: “I’d like to thank all of my teachers at Holy Trinity for all their support and guidance that helped me to achieve a great set of GCSE results over the summer. I hope that this award will help me on the way to getting the resources that I need to succeed in A Levels too!”

Sophie Dawson was extremely pleased: ““I’m so grateful to be receiving the Collyer’s bursary. I’m hoping to go to university after completing my A Levels, so will be putting the money towards this. A massive thank you to all the staff at Millais for providing such fantastic support and opportunities!”

Sam Holden said: “‘I just want to thank Collyer’s for their generosity in awarding me the bursary. However, it was thanks to the brilliant teaching from the staff at Forest, and the wide-ranging opportunities which the school gave me, that I got the results I did. Without them it would have been impossible”.

Natasha Kingdon was ecstatic: “I feel so lucky to be awarded the Collyer’s bursary - I don’t think anyone realises what a difference it’ll make to me! Steyning was my base in which I could get the results I did and I had a good time there. Now onwards and upwards, as they say!”

Aiden Marks was thrilled: “I was really pleased when I received my exam results in August and this is another fantastic reward. I would like to thank the teaching staff at Tanbridge for all their hard work and support that allowed me to get into this position.”

Grace Maxted said: “Thank you this will help so much in my studies! I’d just like to say thank you to all the teachers at Glebelands who helped me along the way!”

Lydia Wilson added: “I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the teachers at Warden Park who made my time at school so fulfilling; I couldn’t have asked for people more dedicated or supportive to my education. I’m also really grateful for the opportunities that the Collyer’s Bursary has opened up for me and I look forward to my next two years at the college and all it has to offer”.

Horsham’s College of Richard Collyer or Collyer’s has been in Horsham for almost 500 years and currently has approximately 1,650 full-time 16-18 students and 500 adult education evening students.

As a top performing institution, Collyer’s has Beacon status and enjoys an “Outstanding” rating from Ofsted.

Dr Jackie Johnston told the students: “You are a credit to the excellent schools you attended and the teachers that taught you, they must be extremely proud of your outstanding GCSE achievements. I’m delighted that you’ve all made a great start at Collyer’s and I’m confident that your individual success stories can continue into advanced level and beyond!”
