Collyer’s host first ‘not going to uni’ event

Although the majority of Collyer’s students progress to university and higher education, a number of students are contemplating taking alternative progression routes or moving into the job market.

In response, the college hosted a packed evening of presentations for a number of students who have much to offer the world of employment.

Speakers from Nestle, Damovo, national apprenticeships, building, care working and accountancy apprenticeships, gave the students a diverse insight to the professional world. The students were also given an insight into professional qualifications, including Ilex Legal Executive and Law Courses.

With personal reflections, question and answer sessions from those currently involved in apprenticeship schemes, the evening represented a great opportunity for networking and discussion.

Many real life examples were given about the next steps after college and an additional talk on Gap year opportunities from Project Raleigh rounded off the event.

Senior Tutor Ian McAlister, who manages the ‘Progression Directorate’ at Collyer’s said: “It was great to see so many students actively engaged in considering their future. There was a wealth of experience at the event and this facilitated some excellent discussion.

“I’m massively grateful to my colleagues Melanie Hargreaves and Lucy Hargreaves, who organised the event brilliantly. They have had a hugely positive impact on the careers and progression programme offered at Collyer’s.

“We also owe a debt of thanks to our inspirational speakers, who all gave freely of their time to meet our young people and guide them in their decision making. They were fantastic!”
