Collyer’s qualify for national maths final

They will now take part in the national final in London on 4th February.

Maths teacher Nick Robins, who co-ordinated the Collyer’s entry, was delighted: “After coming second in their heat last year, the team were determined to go one better – and they did!

“Now we are looking forward to the final! I’m very proud of them.”

The hotly contested regional heat took place in Guildford and brought together the top student mathematicians from 25 schools and colleges.

Each institution put forward a team consisting of four students from year 11, 12 and 13 (or equivalent) with no more than two from Year 13.

The Collyer’s team featured four brilliant young mathematicians: Emily Farr, Beth Hundleby, Dan Kent and George Long.

The 3 hour heats and final comprised three rounds: a group round, a cross-number round and a mini-relay round.

Collyer’s Principal, Dr Jackie Johnston paid tribute to the team: “We have an excellent Mathematics department and Nick Robins and these talented students have worked really hard to qualify for the final of this highly competitive and prestigious national competition.

“We are talking the very best of the best here, so this is fantastic news. Congratulations to everyone involved and good luck in the final!”
