Come along and listen to the band

OH dear!

Peter O'Brien (Gazette letters, August 28) seems to speak without knowledge.

A bandstand can be built vandal-proof, is not a stage in the accepted sense of the word, and can be used for all types of band, and vocal performances.

Maybe he has not listened to a brass band recently, or the Littlehampton Concert Band, or any of the school bands, all of which promote all types of music for all ages.

My husband plays in the Lancing Royal British Legion Brass Band, often in open-air venues, where there is a family atmosphere, with young and old alike enjoying the entertainment.

Sometimes youngsters are invited to take part by being given percussion instruments, or even conducting the band.

Has he never heard of "let's go and listen to the band"?

This is just one source of family entertainment for Littlehampton; Freda Hughes (Gazette letters, August 7) is so right.

Mr O'Brien, come and listen to the band at the Clapham and Patching Flower Show on Saturday and make yourself known.

The bandmaster always includes the audience with light-hearted banter between the items.

Sandra Ozanne,

Leeward Road,

Littlehampton
