Councillors should stand by original bote

I WRITE in reply to Tony Burton's letter (Gazette, January 14) about the North Littlehampton development.

He states that this proposed development is on land totally occupied by old greenhouses, industrial and open storage.

This, in fact, is not entirely true. The development would include not only the Greencore land, but also other businesses and properties that will have no option but to relocate elsewhere.

These businesses employ a large number of people from this area, plus seasonal labour. These people would either be made redundant or have to travel further afield to their jobs.

The government states we should be growing more food in the UK and a proposed new "Thanet Earth" is on the cards for the south of England, so why demolish these existing greenhouses when we could be using them to grow crops?

Also, he states that there would be improved bus services to the north of the town, new school, new community centre, commercial and local retail premises, playing fields, recreation space, youth facilities, additional allotments and the list goes on.

This all sounds very good, but will involve agreement from a whole lot of other organisations in order to get these promises fulfilled.

When and if this proposal gets passed by Arun District Council, the land will then be sold off to the highest bidders, and as we all know from past history, a lot of these promises are never fulfilled and the developers end up doing exactly what they want.

I hope that the councillors who voted against this development will not be bullied into reversing their decision just because their party leaders tell them to.

If this happens, then it just shows that they have no consideration for their own environment and the people who live in it, and if they do not have the strength to stand by their initial vote then they should not be on the council representing the people of Littlehampton.
