Being an occasional visitor with my wife to Littlehampton we always styretch our legs for an easy relaxed stroll. We have been very impressed by the flood defences which are very attractive to parents and children who want to go crabbing.

During one of our visits back in April, I happened to be watching a mother and her children thoroughly enjoying themselves crabbing, but noticedglancing down into the water(it was at low tide) eight discarded crabbing lines lying in the shallows.

The lines were lying within 10ft of each othersome tangled together.

I did nnot see any other lines as the watwer was deeper so the eight lines were probably on a ledge. I was concerned that those eight lines were a mere sample of what the river holds. I have unfortunately visited Littlehampton at high tideso cannot check again.

My concern is what happens to these lines during subsequent tidal movements?

Are they swept out to sea/taken up the river Arun or snagged at the river’s mouth?

Whatever the answer is they are all capable of a good deal of harm to fish whether salt water or fresh, seabirds small boats snagging their engines, oars etc.

I would like to think that your newspaper could bring the above into the public and council’s notice as it is of great concern to me and no doubt, to many other conservationists.
