Creating vibrantcommunity space

HAVING read the article '˜Squaring up to new focal point' (Observer, March 25) we wish to voice our support for Hugh La Trobe's excellent ideas.

The town badly needs a large centrally-located community space which can be used for a variety of purposes.

These could include small-scale concerts given by local musicians as well as the markets, antiques fairs, displays and exhibitions which Mr La Trobe suggests.

The conservatory-style café around the edges of the communal space is also a brilliant idea.

However, let us have some interesting indoor plants too, as well as small trees (whether planted or in pots) outside the building.

It would of course be necessary to close Devonshire Square to all motor traffic.

This would simply mean that east or northbound buses and other traffic can be rerouted down Devonshire Road, along the Marina, and then up Sea Road.

An extra bus stop would need to be created in Sea Road near to the Railway Station.

We believe these proposals would create something new and vibrant for all the community, and would also help green up this currently barren and wasted space.
