Mr Johnson deserves credit for his ability to change his mind. After the EU Referendum in 2016 he proclaimed that the UK could look to the whole world.

It seems that he no longer thinks that millions want to move here from Turkey.

This year he seems to have changed his mind on the use of face coverings to help control infection, and on the impact on health of obesity. He even says he listens to experts which is pleasing.

Now all he needs to do is accept that the only way the UK can have influence in a world of despotic super-powers is as a full participant in the European idea.

If he does that he will be recognised by history as the best UK Prime Minister since Tony Blair.
